Flight to Texas 2002
June found us heading off to east Texas to visit my dad for Father's Day.
This time I flew over the Rocky Mountains just west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Blue performed great taking me over the 14,500' peaks you see here. Usually there is snow on these mountains, but this year has been drier and warmer than most.
Crossing Texas, the air traffic controllers directed me right over the three big airports in the Dallas area. This is a picture of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport (DFW).
Because I followed their instructions so precisely I was rewarded with a nice view of the Cowboy Stadium.
I had trouble finding this private airfield near my dad's house, even though I had flown in to it last summer. There sure are lots of green fields in east Texas! I scouted around for 15 minutes and finally recognized a nearby golf course which led me to the soft landing in this field. This had been a great flying day with many new sights.
The next day I flew around the area with Bill, a local pilot and retired fire chief. He pointed out some landmarks to make my next visit much more direct, and let me put Blue in his hangar to save her from an approaching hail storm. The hail missed us but kindness like this reminds me that flying people sure are great folks.
My dad's girlfriend Marge went with me the following day to top off the fuel tanks and she flew most of the way home. Good job Marge!
